Accounting & Finance Recruitment · Brisbane

Brisbane is no longer playing catch-up. Here's what that means for your next hire — or your next move.

Infrastructure spend, mid-market growth and a tightening talent pool have shifted the dynamics. What employers and candidates actually need to know about Brisbane's accounting and finance market in 2025.

Market snapshot

Brisbane is a genuine growth market — not just a spillover from the south.

For a long time, Brisbane operated in the shadow of Sydney and Melbourne for accounting and finance hiring. That's changed. The 2032 Olympic infrastructure pipeline, a surge in mid-market commercial activity and sustained growth in Queensland's resources and construction sectors have materially shifted demand for qualified finance professionals.

Jobs and Skills Australia's 2025 Skills Priority List confirms accountants remain in national shortage — with employment in the profession growing 6.2% in the year to November 2024. Brisbane is contributing meaningfully to that number. The Hays 2025 Salary Guide identifies Queensland as one of only three states where accounting and finance hiring intent increased year-on-year — the only state outside NSW and VIC to do so.

Employers are selective. The Robert Half 2025 Hiring Intentions Report found 71% of Australian CFOs identified finding suitably skilled finance candidates as their primary hiring challenge. In Brisbane that pressure is most acute at FC, Finance Manager and experienced senior accountant level.

Process matters as much as network. In a tightening market, the difference between a well-run hire and a reactive one isn't just speed — it's whether you end up with the right person at all.

Roles in demand

Where Brisbane hiring is concentrated right now.

Demand isn't uniform. These are the role types moving fastest across commercial and public practice in Brisbane — and why.

Commercial & Industry
Finance Controller & CFO

Brisbane's infrastructure and mid-market boom is driving a wave of businesses professionalising their finance function for the first time. IBISWorld's 2025 Queensland Construction Outlook projects capital expenditure to grow 11% through to 2027. That growth needs financial leadership. FC and CFO roles are moving quickly — and staying open when the hire is wrong.

Commercial & Industry
Management Accountant & Financial Analyst

Business partnering roles are in strong demand as commercial businesses want finance professionals who can interpret numbers — not just report them. CPA Australia's 2024 Business Outlook found FP&A and commercial finance capability ranked as the top skills gap identified by Queensland CFOs. The ability to sit with the business and drive decisions is what's commanding a growing premium.

Senior Accountant & Manager

Brisbane's public practice market — from boutique advisory to Big 4 — is competing hard for experienced seniors and managers. CA ANZ's 2024 member data shows Queensland practices reported the highest vacancy rates for qualified seniors of any state outside NSW. Retention is a real challenge. Firms are moving quickly when they find the right fit — and losing ground when they don't.
